Subsurface Scattering is a texture mask effect that determines translucency (opacity + color) of a model when light passes through it. Subsurface scattering is used for high definition foliage and skin primarily, although other uses may exist (such as on liquid surfaces). An example of an SSS map is shown below as applied to foliage.
