Animation keys, or key frames, is a method of animation in which the position and orientation of a model are recorded at specific frames (keyed) and the software interprets the action in-between those recorded frames; blending the transformations necessary to go from one key frame to another. Key frame animation is typically the first type of animation that an animator learns because it does not require in-depth knowledge of rigs and/or parameters.
